Last evening, portions of the community south of 47th Street experienced heavy rainfall and high winds. Residents in these areas who have downed branches from the storm event may bring them to the curb, where Public Works crews will begin pickup next week. It is not necessary to submit a work request for pickup following this event.

DuBois/Burlington road construction to impact traffic near Congress Park Metra station

The next phase of the Burlington Avenue/DuBois Boulevard Infrastructure Improvements Project will commence next week. Beginning Monday, Aug. 19, DuBois Boulevard north of Ogden Avenue, as well as Burlington Avenue between DuBois and Deyo avenues, will be closed to vehicular traffic as crews begin reconstructing that section of roadway.

Riverside invites residents to join sesquicentennial time capsule project

Village offers free e-waste home collection; sign-up deadline is September 11

Residents in the Village's waste collection program can now sign up to have electronic waste collected from their homes. There is no additional charge for this service. Requests must be received by 6:00 PM on September 11, 2024, for collection during the week of September 16 through March 20, 2024. This service is available twice a year, with the next e-waste collection scheduled for March 2025.

Effective DIY methods for controlling mosquito populations

Sprays only kill adult mosquitoes that fly directly into the mist. Resting adults or mosquito larvae are not affected. The insecticide used in spraying dissipates within 1-3 days. Adult mosquitoes generally fly at dusk and dawn. Public health departments spray in the evenings during mosquito-borne disease outbreaks; spraying at other times is usually ineffective. However, spraying also kills lightning bugs, butterflies, and bees.

Village announces traffic impact due to water main replacement on 31st Street

As part of the planned 2024 Water Main Improvements Project, the Village will replace the water main along 31st Street from Maple Avenue to Sunnyside Avenue. The work is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 19, with preliminary construction preparation starting later this week. The project is expected to be substantially complete by early November.

New residents or those purchasing a vehicle sticker for the first time should obtain a new sticker within 30 days of moving to the Village or acquiring a new vehicle or pet.

Mosquito abatement district plans spraying in parts of Brookfield on Aug. 12

The Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District has announced that due to elevated levels of West Nile Virus, adult mosquito control operations are planned for Monday, Aug. 12, between the hours of 8 p.m. and midnight, weather permitting. The areas affected include all locations within the villages of North Riverside, Riverside (east of 1st Ave), Lyons, McCook and Brookfield (north of 31st Street and west of Forest Avenue, and south of Plainfield Road).
