The Town of Cicero came alive Tuesday evening as residents gathered to celebrate National Night Out, an annual event that brings together communities across the country to promote safety, strengthen neighborhood bonds, and foster positive relationships between residents and local law enforcement.

This year’s event, held at the Town of Cicero Courtyard and Community Center, was filled with activities, conversations, and a sense of unity. In Illinois alone, 179 cities participate in National Night Out.

“It’s a great event! We have great support from town President Larry Dominick and the board of trustees. National Night Out is a nationwide event that’s hosted every year on the first Tuesday of August,” shared Patti Salerno, Director of Special Events.

On August 6th, 2024 families began arriving at the park early in the evening, greeted by music, food stands, and various activities for children including raffles, bounce houses, and games. As the sun set, the community center was bustling with energy.

“This event is all about building relationships and showing that we’re stronger together,” said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. “National Night Out is a reminder that safety is a community effort.”

Cicero’s local law enforcement played a central role in the evening’s activities. Police officers mingled with residents to answer questions and share tips on neighborhood safety.

“Our goal is to build strong connections with the community we serve,” said Cicero Police First Deputy Luis Gutierrez. “National Night Out gives us the perfect opportunity to engage with residents in a positive way.”

Residents expressed their appreciation for the event and for connecting with their neighbors and local officers.

“We just really like coming out and getting to know people on a non-emergency basis,” said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Schwar.

The event also featured informational booths from various community organizations providing resources on health and wellness as well as emergency preparedness.

“The Health department is combining with National Night Out to host back-to-school physicals for children who haven’t been able to receive them,” said Vanessa Parrish Director of Public Health Operations. “We’re doing physicals for pre-k, second-, sixth- and ninth-graders along with any necessary immunizations.”

As night progressed, community pride grew stronger culminating in symbolic lighting of the park representing unity within Cicero's neighborhoods.

“This is what Cicero is all about—family, community, and looking out for one another,” said Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias. “National Night Out is a special time to celebrate that.”

Despite chilly weather many residents stayed throughout participating in raffles where dozens of gifts were distributed among families.
