The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) oversees the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), a federal regulation that aims to ensure safe drinking water by requiring community water systems to track and manage lead service lines. In accordance with these rules, the Village of La Grange has compiled an inventory of suspected lead service lines. The Village used a conservative approach to create this list, aiming to avoid missing any potential lead pipes.

The LCR also mandates that the Village send an annual letter to water customers whose properties are known or suspected to have lead service lines, or where the pipe material is unknown. According to the Village, "The standard template letter informs the recipient that their home or place of business has a suspected lead service line or that the material type is unknown. The letter also explains the health effects of lead, offers steps that consumers can take to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water, and provides contact information for more information. Receipt of the letter is not an indication of elevated lead levels in the water found within your home or business. An example of the letter can be found at this link."

The Village conducts regular testing of its water system to comply with the LCR and ensure that water quality meets federal safety standards. The Village stated, "Through these diligent efforts and proactive infrastructure improvements, the Village is committed to delivering safe, high-quality drinking water to its customers.
