Riverside promotes cycling as a healthy and enjoyable activity but emphasizes the importance of safety for both cyclists and drivers. The Riverside Police Department has shared essential tips and laws to ensure safe cycling in the community.
Illinois law mandates that motorists maintain a minimum distance of three feet when passing bicycles on highways. Bicyclists are required to follow the same road rules as other vehicles.
Electric bicycles, which have motors under 750 watts or gas engines producing less than one horsepower, can be used on streets and bike paths in Illinois, subject to local restrictions. These bicycles do not require registration or insurance but are limited to riders aged 16 or older. Electric bicycles are categorized into three classes based on their speed capabilities and pedal assistance.
Cyclists are advised to equip their bikes with front lights visible from at least 500 feet, reflectors, and rear taillights for night riding. Bright clothing is recommended for visibility, and helmets should be worn to reduce head injury risks by up to 85%. Cyclists should ride with traffic, use hand signals, yield when necessary, avoid sidewalks in retail areas, and check their equipment before riding.
Village Ordinance 8-2-23(C) allows bicycles on residential sidewalks with caution around pedestrians but prohibits them in retail business districts as per ordinance 8-2-23(B).
