The Burlington Avenue Improvement Project is nearing completion, with significant infrastructure upgrades both below and above ground. Nearly 100-year-old water mains have been replaced as part of the project. On the surface, old planter boxes were removed and replaced with garden beds installed "to grade." The restoration of new plantings aligns with recommendations from the 2016 Downtown Revitalization Plan.
Enhancements include "bump outs" on each block to facilitate sidewalk use for local dining at Salerno's and Petite Vie while maintaining pedestrian access. A raised crosswalk was also installed to improve pedestrian safety. The existing corner bump out in front of Oberweis was expanded, and permanent bench-style seating was added. Additionally, the entire three-block stretch has been resurfaced with asphalt.
The Village of Western Springs expressed gratitude to businesses in the Downtown Business District for their patience during this lengthy project. Appreciation was also extended to residents and visitors who continue to support local shops and restaurants, contributing to a vibrant downtown atmosphere.
