The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) has proposed improvements to Plainfield Road, a 3.5-mile corridor between County Line Road and East Avenue. This section runs through the Villages of Burr Ridge, Indian Head Park, Western Springs, La Grange, McCook, the City of Countryside, and unincorporated areas of Lyons Township/La Grange Highlands.

Plainfield Road is crucial for local transportation, with an average daily traffic volume of 14,000 vehicles serving residences, businesses, and schools in the area. The project aims to enhance safety and mobility for all users by improving pedestrian and bicycle accommodations and rehabilitating aging infrastructure. It also seeks to address projected travel demands for 2050.

Proposed upgrades include reconstructing roadway pavement with new curbs and gutters on both sides, introducing a center flush/painted median or continuous left turn lane, adding new turn lanes at necessary intersections, modernizing traffic signals, improving drainage systems, and creating dedicated spaces for pedestrians and bicyclists along the corridor.

A Public Information Open House will be held to gather community input on these proposed improvements. More information about the project can be found on its website: www.ImprovePlainfieldRoad.org.
