Federal immigration agents conducted enforcement actions in River Forest on October 20, targeting landscapers and contractors in the 500 and 600 blocks of Franklin Avenue. The Village of River Forest stated that it was not notified or involved in the operation prior to its commencement.
The Village has not received confirmation about how many individuals were detained or what charges may have been filed as a result of the federal activity. According to the statement, “Federal agencies did not notify or coordinate with the Village prior to initiating these actions.”
Village officials emphasized their commitment to public safety. “The Village’s top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, visitors and students,” according to the statement.
The River Forest Police Department will continue regular service calls and will respond to reports involving immigration enforcement by observing and confirming activity. Officers are guided by the Illinois TRUST Act, which prohibits them from assisting with federal immigration enforcement or interfering with federal agents during such operations. The statement said, “All officers are trained in the TRUST Act and understand their responsibilities in these situations.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to be aware of their rights when interacting with federal officers. The Village recommends consulting resources from organizations such as the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) or accessing Illinois Immigration Information for legal guidance.
