Cook County's Medical Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) has abolished over $664 million in medical debt, benefiting more than 556,000 residents since its inception in 2022. The initiative, a collaboration between Cook County and the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, aims to alleviate the financial and emotional burdens of medical debt.
"Medical debt continues to weigh heavily on too many families. It’s more than just a financial burden. It’s an emotional one that can shake a person’s sense of stability and hope," said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. She expressed pride in the initiative's success and commitment to continuing this relief effort.
The program uses $9 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to reduce financial strain and set an example for other local governments on using public funds effectively. Allison Sesso, president and CEO of Undue Medical Debt, highlighted the importance of removing unpayable debts to help families "breathe a little easier."
MDRI operates by purchasing eligible debt at reduced rates, providing significant returns on investment. For every dollar invested, approximately $100 of medical debt is eliminated. Dennis Anosike from Saint Anthony Hospital praised MDRI for ensuring access to necessary care without financial hesitation.
Medical debt remains a leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S., affecting individuals due to various circumstances like childbirth or emergency care. MDRI provides automatic relief for qualifying debts based on income levels or the proportion of annual income spent on medical expenses.
Beneficiaries have shared their gratitude for the relief provided by MDRI. Raife M., Cecilia E., and Sabrina F. expressed how this initiative has alleviated stress and preserved their financial stability.
President Preckwinkle has also launched other initiatives promoting economic security in Cook County, including a guaranteed income pilot program and a homeowner relief fund.
Medical debt is an escalating issue nationwide, with over 100 million adults affected. People of color face disproportionate burdens compared to white counterparts.
