The Town of Cicero recently held an appreciation luncheon to honor the ParentPatrol volunteers, celebrating 16 years of dedicated service in ensuring student safety. The event, hosted by Town President Larry Dominick, recognized the efforts of parents who volunteer to patrol school areas daily.

Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas, a founding member of the ParentPatrols, shared the origins of the initiative: “Sixteen years ago, we were just a small group of parents who wanted to do something positive for our children and our community,” he said. “When we approached Town President Larry Dominick, he welcomed us with open arms. He believed in the vision—and that made all the difference.”

The program has grown from seven parents to over 300 active volunteers. Vargas highlighted their role as mentors and protectors: “They’re out there every single day, in all weather, ensuring our schools remain safe. They’re the eyes, the ears, the voice of the community,” he said.

President Dominick expressed his gratitude for their commitment: “It’s a great honor to be here today,” he said. “There’s nothing more important than the safety of our children, and with your help, that’s possible. This luncheon is a small token of our gratitude.”

Community leaders and school officials attended the event, including First Lady Diana Dominick and District 99 Superintendent Dr. Aldo Calderin who stated: “The work of a school district cannot be done alone,” adding that without ParentPatrols many safety measures wouldn’t be possible.

Dr. Tim Trusdale from Morton District 201 encouraged continued participation: “I hope District 99 parents continue participating in high school because the presence of parents each day brings so much value to our schools.”

Cicero Police Superintendent Tom Boyle emphasized collaboration: “This celebration is about what can happen when a community works together to protect its children. Your volunteerism is the backbone of this safety net.”

ParentPatrols have become essential in Cicero's approach to school safety, representing families across town. As Chaplain Vargas concluded: “This is proof that we can inspire and uplift our community without needing anything in return.”
