The Village of Riverside has announced its commitment to promoting sustainable landscaping practices that benefit pollinators and enhance the local ecosystem. Although the village will not participate in "No Mow May" in 2025, residents are encouraged to engage in long-term efforts to foster a healthy environment.

Residents are advised to maintain grass at a height of 8 inches or less and remove weeds as needed. In previous years, the awareness program allowed for temporary relaxation of lawn maintenance to support the growth of native species and pollinators. However, this year, the Village Board has decided to focus on ongoing education and support for planting native species that contribute to beneficial ecosystems throughout the year.

These native plants serve as important food sources for pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds that thrive in Riverside. For those interested in incorporating native plantings into their yards, guidance is available at: https://iiseagrant.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Native-Spring-Ephemerals.pdf.
