The Village of Brookfield has been honored as a Tree City USA community for the 44th year in a row by the Arbor Day Foundation. This recognition comes as a result of the village's commitment to maintaining urban forest management. Brookfield met the specific criteria for the award, which includes having a dedicated tree board or department, implementing a tree care ordinance, allocating at least $2 per capita annually for community forestry, and organizing an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
During the recent Village Board meeting on April 14, Village President Michael Garvey read an Arbor Day proclamation to commemorate the achievement. To further celebrate, Village Forester Victor Janusz will lead a tree-planting event on Friday, April 25, at 1 p.m., taking place at Candy Cane Park, located at 29th Street and Park Avenue.
At this event, Janusz is set to plant a single-stem Galaxy Magnolia tree in the center of the park. The tree is renowned for its dark pink/purple blossoms that appear every spring. The public is also invited to participate and will have the opportunity to take home an oak tree sapling, offered by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
The Tree City USA program is a joint effort by the Arbor Day Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters. For those interested in more information about the Tree City USA initiative, resources are available on the Arbor Day Foundation's website.
