The Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program provides tax relief for eligible seniors by allowing them to defer up to $7,500 per tax year on their primary residence. This deferral functions as a loan from the State of Illinois, which is repaid when the property is sold or upon the participant's death. Applications can be obtained at the Cook County Treasurer’s Office or online at cookcountytreasurer.com starting January 1 until the deadline on March 1.

It is important to note that the final day to apply for the Tax Year 2024 is March 1, 2025. According to state law, no extensions are permitted.

For additional information, individuals can refer to "The Senior Citizen Tax Deferral Program Brochure" or contact the Cook County Treasurer's office at (312) 443-5100.
