In the early hours of December 4, 2024, a vehicle was stopped by Riverside Police in the Village of Riverside for traffic violations. During the stop, the driver retrieved a firearm and fled. Shortly after, Forest Park Police attempted to stop the same vehicle but it evaded contact and continued into River Forest.
The vehicle eventually left the road and crashed into a business located in the 300 block of Lathrop at approximately 3:07 AM. The driver exited and entered the unoccupied building. Police surrounded the area and instructed the individual to come out. While inside, the offender fired a handgun; however, it remains unclear if shots were aimed at police officers.
After some time, the individual surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody by River Forest Police with assistance from Forest Park, Oak Park, and Riverside Police departments. The driver was alone in the vehicle, and authorities are not looking for any other suspects.
"This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community," stated officials. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
