The Village of Oak Park has issued an excessive heat warning for Monday, August 26, and Tuesday, August 27. In response, a cooling center will be established at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (611 Randolph St.), operating from 3-7 p.m. on Monday and from noon-8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Additionally, all three branches of the Oak Park Public Library will serve as cooling centers. The Main Library (834 Lake St.) will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the heat wave this week. The Maze Branch (845 Gunderson Ave.) will operate from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days, while the Dole Branch (255 Augusta St.) will be closed on Monday but open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
Oak Park Temple is not available to function as a cooling center this week.
The Village’s cooling center is activated when outdoor temperatures reach or exceed 95 degrees or when there is a heat index of 103 degrees or greater for four or more hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Residents are advised to check on relatives, friends, and neighbors who may be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses or lack access to air conditioning during excessively hot days.
While everyone can suffer from heat-related illnesses, infants and young children, the elderly, people with mental illness, and those with physical ailments such as heart disease or high blood pressure are at higher risk.
To prevent overheating, Oak Park health officials recommend staying out of the sun, wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, drinking water frequently, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.
