Wednesday, July 23, has been designated as Speed Awareness Day in Illinois. This initiative is a statewide effort involving law enforcement agencies collaborating with the Illinois Sheriffs' Association to highlight the dangers of excessive speed on roadways.

On this day, state, county, and local law enforcement officers will focus on proactive enforcement targeting speed-related violations. According to the announcement, "Posted speed limits are not arbitrary. They are designed to protect all users: drivers, passengers, cyclists, pedestrians – everyone!"

The release points out that speed is one of the leading contributory causes of all types of crashes involving motor vehicles. It emphasizes that speeding is not just about exceeding posted limits but also includes driving too fast for weather, road, or traffic conditions. Drivers are urged to be alert and obey speed limit signs, particularly in school zones, residential neighborhoods, and on secondary roads.

The message concludes with a reminder: "Slow down and enjoy the ride!"
