Berwyn FD responds to 120 fires in 2016

Berwyn Fire Department responded to 804 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Cook News.

The calls in Berwyn included 120 fires - 51 structure fires, 21 vehicle fires and 36 other fires. The fire department also responded to 12 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $767,520 in fire loss - or about $6,396 per fire.

The department also received 684 false calls, including six malicious calls and 678 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, five fire service member were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Berwyn Fire, which has 81 active employees and 77 retired or inactive employees, was $5,681,210 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $47,343 for every fire in 2016.
