Proviso Township High Schools District 209 recently hosted Parent University, designed for parents of high school students, on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The session took place 9 a.m.-noon at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, 8601 W. Roosevelt Road, in Forest Park.
Parent University, a collaborative effort between the district and the Strengthening Proviso Youth Committee, is a series of workshops to offer tips that help parents prepare students for success in high school and beyond.
Students from Proviso East and West High Schools or the Mathematics and Science Academy were able to earn one hour of community service credit for each of their parents attending the sessions.
Saturday's session theme was "Becoming a Champion – Helping Your Child Succeed!" Talks and presentations covered how to help a student develop resilience and determination, as well as ways parents can develop a healthy support system at home.
Parents of upcoming freshmen for the 2017-2018 school year were encouraged to attend, too, as freshmen sometimes have difficulty adjusting to high school.
