The Cook County Board of Commissioners has approved several contracts for planning, design, and construction to advance transportation projects managed by the Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH). The initiatives are intended to improve infrastructure maintenance, operations, safety, and connectivity across the region.
One project in Burnham will receive $2.58 million for professional design engineering services. This project aims to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Brainard Avenue and four railroad tracks, connecting facilities in Burnham, Chicago, and the nearby Metra Hegewisch station.
In Chicago, $2.15 million is allocated for design engineering services focused on reconstructing Butler Drive within the Illinois International Port District from 130th Street to Doty Avenue.
Maywood will see $4.2 million directed toward professional engineering services to study a possible grade separation at 1st Avenue where it intersects with Union Pacific railroad tracks.
A major investment of $87.2 million is dedicated to reconstructing Touhy Avenue between Elmhurst Road and Mount Prospect Road. The contract includes building a bridge over Union Pacific railroad tracks, adding new ramps that will connect to the future Tollway I-490, making intersection improvements along Elmhurst Road, and creating a shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians.
South Cook County will benefit from $600,000 in funding for planning services aimed at studying crossing improvements for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users across interstates in the area.
Board President Toni Preckwinkle stated: "These investments demonstrate our commitment to strengthening regional mobility while promoting sustainability through expanded options for walking and biking."
Commissioner Scott Britton added: "By prioritizing critical corridors like Touhy Avenue and supporting multimodal connections throughout Cook County we are investing in safer streets and improved quality of life."
Commissioner Alma Anaya commented: "The projects approved today reflect our ongoing efforts to ensure all communities—urban or suburban—have access to safe reliable transportation networks."
