Cook County has introduced a new Digital Equity website at digitalequity.cookcountyil.gov, aiming to serve as a central hub for residents and partners seeking resources and initiatives that promote equitable access to technology throughout the county.
The site provides streamlined access to the Digital Equity Action Plan, which outlines strategies for expanding access, building digital confidence, strengthening internet safety, and improving infrastructure. This initiative seeks to make information, tools, and opportunities more accessible for residents, organizations, and policymakers.
“Digital access is not a luxury, it is a necessity,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “With this new website, Cook County is making it easier for residents to find resources, organizations to collaborate and policymakers to act. This is about breaking down barriers and ensuring that every community has the tools and opportunities to succeed in a digital world.”
Kyla Williams Tate, Cook County’s inaugural Director of Digital Equity, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project: “Our website is a trusted source of information and a commitment to our residents. It lifts up the stories, needs and solutions shared across Cook County. With an accessible and easy-to-use site, we’re creating a more equitable digital foundation that brings opportunity and connection to more communities.”
The site offers features such as device donation programs and digital skills training opportunities designed for use by residents, nonprofits, libraries, policymakers or anyone interested in engaging in digital spaces.
Mauricio Jimenez, Digital Equity Coordinator for Cook County stated: “Its data and mapping tools give partners the insight they need to target investments effectively and efficiently, spurring economic growth and expanding opportunity where it is needed most.”
Key components of the website include:
- The Digital Equity Map displays areas where efforts are closing gaps in digital inclusion and broadband connectivity as well as regions still needing support.
- A Resource Library provides tools highlighting programs related to affordable internet access, devices availability, skills training programs along with stories from those involved.
- Opportunities are available for public involvement through device donation drives, participation in the Digital Navigator Network or applying for community grants.
- The platform shares statistics such as 27% of households lacking wireline internet service in Cook County; 21% without computers at home; with input from 3,400 residents helping shape the action plan through surveys.
Cook County encourages individuals interested in developing their digital skills or supporting local digital equity efforts to visit digitalequity.cookcountyil.gov.
