Ecological restoration technicians are scheduled to treat Swan Pond and Riverside Road for invasive plants on July 11. The Village of Riverside has requested that residents avoid these areas for 12 hours after the treatment. Flagging has been installed to inform the public about the application, and once it is removed, the areas will be accessible again.
The chemicals used in this process dry within ten minutes and remain contained within the treated site. These chemicals work by translocating inside the plant to its roots to eliminate invasive species. The Village of Riverside acknowledges public concerns regarding herbicide use but emphasizes their necessity in controlling non-native species to support native vegetation.
"We do not take the use of these chemicals lightly; however, they are necessary in controlling invasive, non-native species in favor of our native vegetation," stated a representative from the Village. "When applied judiciously, these chemicals can help to support ecological restoration initiatives in a responsible and safe manner."
