The River Forest Police Department has initiated a traffic safety campaign focused on impaired and unbuckled drivers, set to run from June 20 through July 7. This period includes three weekends surrounding Independence Day. Chief Jim Greenwood of the River Forest Police stated, “We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely.” He further emphasized the importance of sober driving, adding, “If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances.”
This initiative is part of a larger statewide effort involving the Illinois State Police and over 200 local police and sheriff’s departments. The campaign aims to reduce incidents related to impaired driving by encouraging safe practices such as designating a sober driver.
Key recommendations include giving your keys to a designated driver before going out, using alternative transportation if impaired, reporting impaired drivers by calling 911, and ensuring all vehicle occupants wear seat belts.
The campaigns “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket” are funded by federal traffic safety resources provided through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). These enforcement activities are supported by IDOT’s media campaign "It’s Not a Game," which highlights the severe consequences of unsafe driving behaviors.
