ComEd's electricity rates have increased, but those enrolled in Riverside's 100% green energy program will pay less than the current ComEd rate. The village's electric aggregation initiative with MC Squared Energy Services remains focused on renewable energy. Last year, the Village Board renewed this program at a fixed rate of 8.09¢ per kWh, securing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to offset all power usage. RECs are used to track renewable energy generation. At that time, the rate was higher than ComEd's.
For June 2025, ComEd's rate rose to 10.555¢ per kWh, making Riverside’s program rate of 8.09¢ advantageous for participants. This month, households in the program are saving an average of $21 on their ComEd bills.
Riverside is noted as the only municipality in Illinois with a continuous 100% Green Renewable Energy Electric Aggregation program since it began in 2012.
On June 5, the Board decided to extend the current program beyond its October expiration date. Residents can expect a notice mailed to their homes in August with further details.
