The Village has approved the Road to 2050 Climate Action and Resilience Plan, announced on May 1, 2025. This plan stems from the Village's participation in the C4 Initiative which began in 2022. A collective effort from Village Trustees, staff, and volunteers contributed to creating a Framework that proposed key initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions throughout Riverside. Input from Riverside residents and business leaders also shaped the Framework, forming the foundation for the Road to 2050 Plan.
The plan outlines 45 strategies and 134 actions across eight sectors. It aims to guide the community in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while also building infrastructure and social resilience. The sectors include Efficient Buildings and Energy, Clean Transportation, Waste Reduction and Sustainable Materials, Healthy Green Spaces, Sustainable Village Operations, Water and Wastewater, Community-Wide Resilience, and Social Cohesion and Equity. This plan will undergo regular review with an update scheduled for 2030.
"Our exceptional effort would not have been possible without such strong support from our community, hundreds of residents who provided feedback and ideas, support from the Village Board of Trustees, and countless hours of work from the Riverside C4 Team volunteers," stated the release, with gratitude extended to all contributors.
An Open House Celebration has been scheduled for May 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the Train Station Platform. Details will be forthcoming. The event invites participants to arrive by bike, on foot, or after disembarking the train to learn more about the plan and upcoming steps for the Road to 2050.
