Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is set to discuss new developments regarding a bipartisan legislation aimed at altering senior driving requirements in Illinois. This initiative, in collaboration with AARP Illinois, proposes increasing the age for mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests from 79 to 87. Additionally, it seeks to implement procedures allowing immediate relatives to report unsafe drivers.
Currently, Illinois stands as the only state requiring age-based behind-the-wheel tests for seniors. It is also among five states that do not permit family members to express concerns about a relative's driving abilities.
The proposed legislation includes measures to prevent unsafe motorists from driving, irrespective of their age. Should a motorist's skills deteriorate or if cognitive or medical issues arise affecting safe driving, the measure allows immediate relatives to submit a written report for review by the Secretary of State’s office.
