On December 2, 2024, the Cook County Commission on Human Rights issued a notice to employees regarding the Cook County Minimum Wage Ordinance. Effective January 1, 2025, the minimum wage in Cook County will increase to $15.00 for non-tipped employees and $9.00 for tipped employees.
The ordinance establishes the lowest amount an employer must legally pay employees working within Cook County's geographical boundaries. The county's minimum wage is determined by whichever is higher: the Federal minimum wage, Illinois State minimum wage, or a rate calculated using the Consumer Price Index.
In alignment with Illinois' Minimum Wage Law, Cook County supports this increase to ensure labor protections for its most vulnerable workers. Employees covered by the ordinance must be over 18 years old and work at least two hours in any two-week period for an employer with four or more employees or domestic workers within Cook County.
The enforcement agency for this ordinance is the Cook County Commission on Human Rights. Employees with concerns about receiving less than the required minimum wage should verify if their municipality has opted out of this ordinance before filing a complaint with the commission.
Ordinance No. 16-5768 was passed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners on October 26, 2016.
