Nov. 30, 2024 - Jerell Thomas, a resident of the 4100 block of W. Cermak Rd. in Chicago, faces multiple charges including first-degree murder following the death of Oak Park Detective Allan Reddins. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has also charged Thomas with attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of a stolen firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The Village of Oak Park and its Police Department have expressed gratitude for the community's condolences and support in light of Detective Reddins' passing. Plans for a public memorial are underway, with details to be announced soon.

Detective Allan Reddins was killed on Nov. 29, 2024, while responding to an armed offender call. The Village of Oak Park extended condolences to his family and colleagues as they cope with this tragic event. His death is the first line-of-duty fatality for the department since 1938.

At approximately 9:36 a.m., shots were reported on Lake Street in Oak Park. Firefighter/paramedics found that Detective Reddins had been shot in the left side and transported him to Loyola University Medical Center where he later died at around 10:10 a.m.

Police were called after reports indicated an offender leaving a local bank with a gun. The suspect was shot in the leg during the incident and remains in custody at Loyola University Medical Center in stable condition.

Detective Reddins, aged 40 and from Chicago, joined the Oak Park Police Department in May 2019.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Oak Park Police Department at 708-386-3800 or provide anonymous tips via phone or online.
