Oak Park is marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month by offering resources for residents seeking breast health screenings. Uninsured or underinsured individuals in Oak Park and the surrounding Chicagoland area can reach out to Equal Hope, a not-for-profit organization that provides assistance with breast health screening and follow-up care. Interested parties can submit a request form online or call 312.942.3369.
In support of those affected by breast cancer, members of the Oak Park Police Department will wear pink uniform patches and pins throughout October.
Breast cancer ranks as one of the most prevalent cancers among women, second only to skin cancer. Statistics indicate that approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, with a five-year relative survival rate of 99% when identified at its earliest stages.
The American Cancer Society offers screening guidelines for individuals at average risk:
- Women aged 40 to 44 may opt for annual mammograms.
- Women aged 45 to 54 should have yearly mammograms.
- Women aged 55 and older can choose between biennial or continued annual mammograms, provided they are in good health and expected to live at least another decade.
- Transgender women should consult their doctors about breast cancer risks following hormone therapy and breast development.
- Transgender men should discuss potential risks related to any remaining breast/chest tissue with their healthcare providers.
While some risk factors such as family history or genetic mutations cannot be altered, lifestyle choices like alcohol consumption and physical activity levels can be managed. Officials advise consulting with a doctor regarding personal risk factors and appropriate mammogram schedules.
