Fresh-picked corn from Market growers will be sold by the ear hot off the roaster from about 9:30 a.m. until supplies are gone at the Market in the Pilgrim Church parking lot at 460 Lake St.
Patrons are encouraged to bring cash to the fundraiser event as credit cards are not accepted when purchasing roasted corn. Each ear will be sold for $3.
This year's Corn Roast will once again be a zero-waste event, meaning all corn cobs, wrappers, and take-away bags are compostable.
In keeping with the eco-friendly mindset, the Farmers’ Market recently introduced a new program where patrons can take or leave a reusable bag while shopping. Individuals looking to donate clean reusable bags that are in good condition can leave them on the clothesline hanging from the Farmers’ Market cooling tent. Anyone who needs a bag is encouraged to take a bag from the clothesline.
In addition to the Corn Roast, Farmers’ Market officials are also looking forward to the Farmers’ Market’s annual Pie Bake-Off on Sept. 7. Registration is now open for the contest, which is open to amateur bakers. Sign up to participate at www.oak-park.us/pie-registration. More details and contest rules can be found at www.oak-park.us/2024piebakeoff. Entry forms may be submitted through Aug. 29.
The annual Corn Roast is Oak Park's way of joining markets across the country in celebrating National Farmers' Market Week running Aug. 4-10. This year’s celebration highlights the vital role farmers’ markets play in our nation’s food system.
The Oak Park Farmers' Market began in 1976 with just one farmer and currently hosts more than 25 vendors.
Oak Park area residents and visitors are invited to enjoy this dynamic outdoor marketplace which brings fresh produce, meats, cheese, eggs, baked goods, breads, flowers, honey, hot artisanal cheese sandwiches, and grains from working farms in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan.
The Oak Park Farmers' Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine every Saturday through Oct. 26. For more information visit www.oak-park.us/farmersmarket call 708-358-5780 or email farmersmarket@oak-park.us.
