Cicero Town President Larry Dominick has issued a statement addressing the increasing abuse of fentanyl in the community. Highlighting the devastating impact of drug abuse, Dominick emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal sale and use of drugs to save lives.
"We all know that illegal drugs or the abuse of legal drugs can destroy lives. We see it every day. It’s a plague that is difficult to control but we continue to fight the illegal sale and use of drugs because we want to save lives," Dominick stated.
He pointed out that drug dealers prioritize profit over the well-being of individuals affected by drug misuse. "The drug dealers don’t care about how drugs impact your lives. They are only concerned about profiting on your suffering."
Fentanyl, which is used for pain relief in controlled doses prescribed by medical professionals, is significantly more potent than both morphine and heroin. "In modest doses in controlled substances and prescribed by medical doctors, Fentanyl is used for pain relief. But it is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin," he explained. However, when used without a prescription, fentanyl becomes lethal.
Recent incidents have underscored this danger, with four fatalities reported in just one week due to illegal drug use involving fentanyl. "In the past week, we have seen how dangerous and life-threatening drugs are. Four people have died from the illegal drug use mixed with lethal doses of Fentanyl," Dominick noted.
Dominick urged families to intervene if they suspect their relatives are involved in drug use to prevent further deaths. "We do not want to see more people die. We are urging families who are aware of relatives who are involved in drug use to get involved and prevent their deaths."
He warned about the unpredictable nature of fentanyl-laced drugs: "The fentanyl epidemic is spreading. You won’t know the extent of the fentanyl that has been added to an illegal drug you purchase until it’s too late and you use it."
Acknowledging the challenges in reasoning with individuals who use illegal drugs, Dominick appealed directly to families: "I know people who use illegal drugs can’t be reasoned with. But families out there and those who care about relatives who may be using drugs can help prevent these unnecessary and tragic deaths from continuing."
Expressing deep concern over the presence of fentanyl in illicit substances currently being sold, he called for proactive measures: "We are very concerned about the amount of fentanyl in the illegal drugs that are now being sold and urge you to do as much as possible to help prevent more deaths from taking place."
Dominick concluded by advising immediate action if someone is known to be using illegal drugs: "If someone is using illegal drugs, do them a favor and immediately call the police or even a hospital. You just might save their lives."
