The Village of Oak Park has lifted the exemption on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers following recent storm damage. Typically, gas-powered leaf blowers are only allowed from October 31 to May 31, while electric leaf blowers can be used year-round. Equipment operation is restricted to weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and weekends between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., which is more restrictive than the Village Code’s noise ordinance.

Public Works crews are currently addressing damage from the storm that hit Oak Park on July 15th. The exemption, outlined in Section 8-41-5 of the Village code, allows for gas-powered leaf blower use during emergency responses. This remains in effect until further notice.

Crews have been working to clear downed trees and limbs throughout Oak Park. Officials reported the removal of ten sizable trees from roadways, with Jackson Blvd. between Taylor Ave. and Lyman Ave. remaining closed due to downed power lines awaiting repair by ComEd.

Additionally, approximately ten trees were removed from private homes, with an estimated five more still needing attention. Efforts are ongoing, supported by Cook County Emergency Management Office resources.

Residents are reminded that the Village does not pick up brush from private property trees but offers options for disposal through bundling with yard waste stickers or contacting private contractors.

Strong storms impacted Oak Park on July 15th, causing significant damage primarily between I-290 and Madison St., closing several intersections due to downed limbs and power lines. Six Public Works crews, along with two outside contractors, are working to clear hazards from streets and sidewalks.

ComEd reports over 4,900 outages affecting more than 200,000 customers as of Tuesday morning, with about 750 affected in Oak Park. Crews from ComEd and Nicor are assisting in service restoration efforts.

For emergencies such as downed power lines, residents should call 911. Non-life-threatening storm damage can be reported to Public Works at 708-358-5700 or publicworks@oak-park.us.

Oak Park is a vibrant community located nine miles west of downtown Chicago known for its progressive values and cultural attractions including Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio.
