The BNSF Railroad grade crossing at Prairie Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24 through 5 p.m. on Friday, July 26 for road construction crews to restore the Burlington Avenue/Prairie Avenue intersection as part of the Burlington Avenue Storm Sewer/Street Improvement Project.
While the intersection will be closed all day on Wednesday, July 24, intersection work that day will only take place between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. No work will occur in the Burlington/Prairie intersection during the Chicago Grit Cycle Brookfield Criterium. Intersection work will resume on the morning of July 25 and continue throughout the day as well on July 26.
While the grade crossing will be closed to motor vehicles during the entire construction period, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to use the east sidewalk to cross the tracks.
South of the tracks, Prairie Avenue will be closed at the south crosswalk. Motor vehicles looking to access Burlington Avenue east of Prairie Avenue must do so from Forest Avenue via Windemere or Southview avenues. Parking on Burlington Avenue east of Prairie Avenue will not be allowed during the day to pave and stripe the roadway.
Burlington Avenue east of Prairie Avenue will receive its final layer of asphalt and restriping during this period. While Burlington Avenue may be closed to vehicular traffic for a short time while asphalt is being applied, it should be accessible at all other times. Burlington Avenue east of Prairie Avenue will remain accessible at all times to pedestrians and bicycles.
