Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle joined Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and other elected officials today to celebrate $500,000 in funding secured by the congressman through federal Community Project Funding for a vital project along Central Road in Hoffman Estates and South Barrington.

“Cook County is extremely grateful to Rep. Krishnamoorthi for his support of our work to ensure that the County’s infrastructure provides our residents with a high quality of life and allows businesses to thrive,” said President Preckwinkle. “These funds will help the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways bring the Central Road reconstruction project forward more quickly.”

“By making improvements to Central Road and adding to South Barrington’s and Hoffman Estates’ vast multi-use path network, we are connecting our communities while making them even safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. “The funding I secured will improve the quality of life for residents of Hoffman Estates and the surrounding community, and I am grateful to President Preckwinkle and Mayors McLeod and McCombie for their leadership and support for this project.”

The 1.3-mile project will replace the pavement on Central Road with one 12-foot-wide through lane in each direction divided by a 16-foot-wide mountable median, as well as a new enclosed stormwater system.

The project will also add a new multi-use path along the north side of Central Road from the Paul Douglas Forest Preserves to the Pace Park-n-Ride multi-modal facility at Barrington Road. The path will also connect to the existing Barrington Road sidepath, closing the gap in the cycling network between the Pace facility and the forest preserve.

In addition to federal Community Project Funding, Cook County will lead the $18.9 million improvement and contribute $16.3 million in motor fuel tax funds; just over $1 million will come from REBUILD ILLINOIS Bond funds; the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program is contributing more than $600,000; and the Village of Hoffman Estates has committed $170,000.

“We appreciate the collaboration between Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s office, Cook County, and South Barrington in seeing this project to completion,” said Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod. “The Central Road project is a long-awaited improvement that businesses and residents will be very happy with.”

Motorists and pedestrians along Central Road in Hoffman Estates and South Barrington will benefit from expanded travel options provided by these improvements.

“We are very excited and appreciate the efforts of Congressman Krishnamoorthi, President Preckwinkle, and all those who worked on this project towards improving our vital South Barrington entrance on Central Road,” said South Barrington Mayor Paula McCombie. “The addition of a multi-use path as part of this project will enhance the roadway even further with future proposed bike path connections on Barrington Road.”

The project is expected to break ground in 2025 and take approximately two years to complete.
