Visit Oak Park, the state-certified destination marketing organization for Chicago’s near west suburbs, has announced a contest inviting participants to capture the best images of the cicada invasion expected in Illinois this summer.

The competition comprises three categories: Most Colorful Picture, Most Cicadas in One Picture, and Best Action Shot. Winners from each category will be awarded a $100 gift card.

The cicadas have already begun emerging from their underground burrows. The contest is open until June 19, allowing ample time for participants to submit their photographs.

To enter the contest, participants are required to post their snapshots on Instagram or Facebook, tagging @visitoakpark and indicating the location where the photo was taken. Additionally, entrants must follow Visit Oak Park on Instagram and like its Facebook page.

Eligible photos must be taken at Forest Preserves of Cook County locations in or near Brookfield, Forest Park, Franklin Park, La Grange, La Grange Park, Oak Park, River Forest, Riverside, Schiller Park and Westchester.

This type of cicada invasion won't occur again until 2037. Participants are encouraged to embrace this unique opportunity and potentially win a $100 gift card while documenting this historic natural event.
