At the March 21, 2024 Village Board Meeting, the Landscape Advisory Commission (LAC) proposed to suspend enforcement of Title 7, Chapter 7 of the Village Ordinance which limits the height of grass to eight inches as part of the No Mow May initiative. The Board agreed to suspend enforcement effective immediately (March 21, 2024) through May 12, 2024.

The No Mow May initiative in Riverside has a history of promoting environmental conservation. In 2022, the LAC collaborated with the Riverside Public Library to introduce the initiative by roping off a square area of grass on Swan Pond Hill adjacent to the Library, which was left unmowed throughout May. Following the success of this pilot, the Village Board approved the suspension of grass height regulations in May 2023 and again in 2024 from March 21 to May 12.

Explaining the significance of the initiative, the LAC stated, "This LAC initiative recognizes that the start of the growing season is a critical time for hungry, newly emerged native bees. Floral resources may be hard to find, especially in urban and suburban landscapes. By allowing grass to grow longer and letting flowers bloom, lawns can provide nectar and pollen to help bee populations thrive."

The No Mow May initiative in Riverside continues to serve as a proactive measure to support local ecosystems and encourage biodiversity by providing essential resources for native bee populations during the crucial early stages of the growing season.
