The Elmhurst City Council recently welcomed some of their young constituents to celebrate an accomplishment.

“Our motto at York drama is 'Be the good,'” Rebecca Marianetti, director of York High School drama team, said during the meeting. “And so we always try to choose material that gives examples of how people, in this case animals and creatures and wonderful things, can be the good in the world. And I think that's something that we all need right now. And so it was a very exciting time. So we're very proud of the medal which we presented to you as well. But we are even more proud of the people and the performers that these students are.”

The council uploaded a livestream of its public meeting to the city’s YouTube channel.

At their March 20 council meeting, Elmhurst city officials welcomed the York Community High School Speech and Drama team. Their Performance in the Round (PIR) piece of “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse” led the 12-student team to perform the 15-minute piece at the state championship competition at the Illinois High School Association Speech State Final in mid February. The team’s performance won them the school’s first ever state championship title for PIR Drama.

Their PIR piece is an adaptation of Charlie Mackesy’s book, which features a boy lost in the woods trying to find his way home. Along his journey, he meets and makes friends with various animals. Director Matt Bourke said the team was excited to share the message of the well loved story with their audiences. The PIR team consists of freshman Eloise Hill and Tara Freund (stage manager), sophomore Alexa Klein, juniors Charlie Matias, Elle Kramer, Gio Santoro, Jack Davies, Noley Hanna, Sam Yungmann, Will Fischer and seniors Luke Hanley and Oliver Roy.

Mayor Scott Levin issued a proclamation in honor of the team’s performance and success this year, and their hard work and dedication to pursuing their extra curricular interests while in school. The council welcomed up the three directors of the drama team to talk about their performances and the piece that they performed. All of the students had deep connections with the story and greatly enjoyed their time competing, saying they learned a lot about theatre and storytelling. They were excited to show off their medal to the council and be congratulated by all council members.

The council will meet again at 7:30 p.m. on April 3 at the City Hall at 209 North York St.
