Village of Hinsdale Board discusses proposed tax levy

At the Nov. 15 Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees meeting, the board discussed the proposed annual tax levy.

“The proposed tax levy, totaling $11,715,033, represents the village anticipated tax levy for calendar year 2022,” Thomas Cauley, village board president, said. “On the agenda this evening is an ordinance to levy for 2022 and the aggregate amount of $14,930,551, which is inclusive of a series of abatements.”

The board livestreamed its public meeting to the village’s website.

The village board had formerly approved the tentative village tax levy for 2022 for $11,750,000, which was a 5.7% increase from the 2021 tax levy. According to truth in taxation laws, the village is required to hold a public hearing as the increase is above 5% from the previous year.

The meeting’s agenda outlines the various tax levys the board voted on.

The village board allowed public comment for the proposal but no citizen commented or asked questions. 

The total tax levy includes funding for the library, police and fire pension funds, handicapped accessibility, and other funds. The final number will be locked in at the December board meeting.

The board also discussed some of the specifics for the tax levy. The library had not yet submitted its final amount as the decision will be set during its December meeting. The board also discussed the proponents that went into the final number of $11,750,000, with the number including debt payments for bonds almost reaching $15 million before the formal abatements bring it down to what was proposed.
