The village of La Grange has honored three police officers for outstanding service after their life-saving efforts when responding to a fire call.
“Their actions are highly commendable and bring great credit to each personally, to the department, to the village, and really to be celebrated by all of the residents,” Village President Mark Kuchler said during the June 13 La Grange Village Board meeting. A video of the meeting is on YouTube.
On May 25, officers and fire trucks were dispatched to a residential fire. Upon their arrival, the officers noticed smoke coming from the residence.
Officer Parker Henderson, a recent arrival to the force, entered the building with a fire extinguisher and attempted to control the fire in the kitchen. Sgt. Kennedy Uher and Officer Casey Gomorczak entered the residence and brought out an elderly resident.
Because of their actions, the elderly woman and her daughter survived. Chief Robert Wardlaw presented the officers with a Life Saving Award.
The video shows that one of the recognized officers had a special role during the city council meeting in which the awards were given. Uher and other members of his family opened the session during the pledge of allegiance. Uher lifted his young son, Bryson, to lead the pledge. His father Ken Sr., who recently retired after serving 40 years at the village post office, was also on hand.
