Berkeley Fire District responded to 169 calls in 2018 - 31 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Berkeley included 42 fires - 19 structure fires, 17 vehicle fires and six other fires.

In all, the department saw $728,922 in fire loss - or about $17,355 per fire.

The department also received 127 false calls, including three malicious calls and 124 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related deaths.
