ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 82: Illinois EPA to facilitate formal public meeting in Willowbrook on August 1st
Illinois State House District 82 issued the following announcement on July 15
In response to public concern over Sterigenics’ application for a construction permit, the Illinois EPA has agreed to facilitate a formal public meeting to answer questions and allow residents to offer comment. The meeting will be held on August 1, 2019, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Ashton Place in Willowbrook.
The following letter was sent on July 15, 2019 to House Republican Leader Jim Durkin and Senator John Curran by Illinois EPA Director John J. Kim:
Pursuant to your request on behalf of your constituents, the Illinois EPA is facilitating a formal public meeting in Willowbrook to allow concerned citizens the opportunity to offer comment on Sterigenics US, LLC’s application for construction permit for improvements in the control of emissions. As you know, a public hearing, meeting, or comment period is not required by law for a construction permit of this type; however, in consideration of your request and based on past Agency practice with projects of significant public interest, we will provide an enhanced public outreach process.
The formal public meeting will afford:
Written comment period;
Stenographer to record the proceedings;
Presentation by Illinois EPA on the draft permit; and
Opportunity for the public to make verbal comments and ask questions. The Illinois EPA will respond to those comments and questions in writing via the responsiveness summary following the close of the full public comment period.
The moderator will organize the meeting so as to prioritize time for interested attendees who would like to make comments.
We will soon be providing public notice of the formal public meeting to be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on August 1, 2019, at Ashton Place in Willowbrook.
A written public comment period will begin on July 15, 2019, and close on August 15, 2019. Following the closure of the public comment period, the Illinois EPA will prepare a responsiveness summary that describes the public meeting, summarizes the significant written and oral comments and questions, and responds to those comments and questions. The final permit decision and responsiveness summary will be made available to the public on the Agency’s website.
We believe that this approach is responsive to your requests and those of your constituents, provides the public with more detailed information on the permit application, and affords an enhanced opportunity for the public to offer comment on the draft permit prior to Illinois EPA taking final action on the application.
