Loyola Health System issued the following announcement on Aug. 21.

MAYWOOD, IL – Charles McMahon, MD, who specializes in treating gastrointestinal disorders, has joined Loyola Medicine.

Dr. McMahon treats functional gastrointestinal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other GI disorders, and performs colon cancer screenings.

Dr. McMahon sees patients at the Loyola Outpatient Center in Maywood and Loyola Center for Health at Oakbrook Terrace. He performs endoscopy procedures at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park.

New technologies and procedures are improving patient outcomes, Dr. McMahon said. For example, new advances in digital cameras have allowed colonoscopies to become more accurate in detecting small and subtle pre-cancerous growths called polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Also, less invasive endoscopic procedures can in some cases be performed rather than open surgery.

"It's an exciting time in gastroenterology," Dr. McMahon said.

Dr. McMahon is an assistant professor in the division of gastroenterology, department of medicine of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in gastroenterology.

Dr. McMahon received a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
