Bellwood FD responds to 88 fires in 2016

Bellwood Fire Department responded to 353 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Cook News.

The calls in Bellwood included 88 fires - 50 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 25 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $364,500 in fire loss - or about $4,142 per fire.

The department also received 265 false calls, including two malicious calls and 263 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Bellwood Fire, which has 24 active employees and 31 retired or inactive employees, was $1,509,256 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $17,151 for every fire in 2016.
