STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) presentations headlined River Forest District 90's recent Committee of the Whole meeting.

Instructors Tim Strains and A.J. Peters gave a presentation on a STEM program offered in the district's K-4 schools. They also discussed Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) STEM Fusion initiative. Roosevelt teacher Alex Mendralla then followed with information on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) from a middle school perspective.

IMSA STEM is an Aurora-based initiative combining teacher professional development with a STEM enrichment program for Illinois students who are talented, interested and motivated in math and science, particularly those areas that are traditionally underrepresented or underserved.

In the area of facilities and maintenance, the committee continued discussions regarding a proposed HVAC upgrade project that would be limited to the Roosevelt school auditorium because of cost and timing, due to summer school scheduling. The board approved the project as recommended.

Regarding governance, Patrick Meyer advised members about two upcoming events: a self-evaluation board meeting facilitated by the Illinois Association of School Boards, and a Youth Interventionist Program Q-and-A-style informational meeting. Meyer called on board members to attend the session to represent District 90, as more and more students living in the district currently are using the program.
