Nineteen of suburban Chicago’s 200 highest tax-paying commercial properties are in western Cook County, according to a Local Government Information Services (LGIS) analysis of property tax data from the Cook County Treasurer. Collectively, these 19 properties contributed $34.71 million to Cook County’s public funds, which go towards municipal salaries and local school districts.
Western Cook County’s 53 police and fire pension funds paid out a total of $97,778,122 in benefits to 1,894 retirees and inactive recipients in 2016 while losing $4,160,610 on their investments, according to a West Cook News analysis of the funds' mandated financial filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance.
