National Drug Take Back Day will take place on Saturday, October 25. The event is designed to give the public a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unwanted or expired prescription medications. Organizers say that proper disposal helps prevent drug misuse, reduces overdose deaths, and protects the environment from contamination by pharmaceuticals.
The Village of Western Springs has teamed up with the Cook County Sheriff's Office to provide a permanent medication drop-off box outside the front doors at Village Hall. This deposit box is available not only on Drug Take Back Day but every day. Residents can use it to safely dispose of expired, unused, prescription, or non-prescription medications in dry or pill form. Liquids, syringes, and loose medications are not accepted. Authorities recommend blacking out personal information on prescription bottle labels or placing medications in a sealed bag before disposal.
Medical sharps can be disposed of in regular household garbage if certain precautions are taken. Sharps should be placed in a sturdy plastic container that seals tightly, such as a detergent bottle or milk jug. Tape should be used to secure the lid before placing the container in regular trash for collection by LRS.
