Metra has announced a proposed budget of $1.1 billion for 2026, which includes the first fare increase since 2018. The increase is required by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) to address a projected shortfall of $68 million. Despite the budget gap, Metra officials stated that there will be no reductions in service.
In addition to the operating budget, Metra has put forward a capital plan totaling $575.3 million. This plan continues investments in infrastructure such as bridges and stations, as well as new and refurbished trains.
The proposed budget and capital plan will be presented for public input before a final decision is made by the Metra Board of Directors in November. Eight in-person public hearings are scheduled across different locations, with details available through the full press release on Metra’s website. There will also be a virtual hearing via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m., with instructions for participation provided online.
Metra is inviting riders and community members to review its proposed 2026 budget book and participate in the feedback process ahead of the board’s vote.
