Metra has announced its proposed budget for 2026, totaling $1.1 billion. The budget includes a fare increase mandated by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and other steps to address a projected $68 million deficit. According to Metra, there will be no cuts to service as part of the plan. In addition to the operating budget, Metra has put forward a $575.3 million capital plan focused on continued investment in infrastructure such as bridges, stations, and both new and rehabilitated rolling stock.

The public will have an opportunity to provide feedback on these proposals through hearings scheduled before the Metra Board of Directors votes in early November. The hearings can be attended either virtually or in person, and written comments are also being accepted. Details on how to participate are available in the Metra media release.
