The Riverside Fire Department has joined with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to highlight fire safety during this year’s Fire Prevention Week, taking place from October 5 to 11. The campaign, called “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” aims to inform residents about safe practices when buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries.
According to the department, using products with proper safety certification is key. Consumers are encouraged to look for marks such as UL, ETL, or CSA on devices that use lithium-ion batteries. These certifications indicate compliance with established safety standards.
The department also advises residents to use only the original charging cords provided by manufacturers and to follow all instructions. It is recommended that new chargers be purchased directly from manufacturers or approved sources. Devices should be charged on hard surfaces and not left plugged in after reaching full charge.
Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries can cause fires if they end up in trash or regular recycling bins. Residents are urged to recycle these batteries at designated locations. "Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you, or drop your batteries off at the Riverside Public Works facility," states information provided by the department.
