In a ceremony held at St. Odilo Church in Berwyn, first responders were honored during the annual Blue Mass. The event brought together police officers, firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers, public officials, and community members from Cicero and Berwyn to recognize those who serve in the line of duty.
Cicero Police Superintendent Tom Boyle and Fire Chief Jeff Penzkofer delivered messages of gratitude and unity. Superintendent Boyle expressed appreciation for the community's support: “Your presence here this morning is not just appreciated, it’s significant,” he said. He emphasized the importance of the Blue Mass as a moment to reflect on public service and paid tribute to fallen officers and those injured in duty.
Officer Luis Martinez was recognized for his ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in December 2020. Retired Officers Lewis Doherty and Ricardo Sanchez were also honored for their service despite being medically retired due to injuries.
Boyle remarked that these officers "embody what it means to serve with honor," noting that their badges symbolize sacrifice and responsibility.
Fire Chief Penzkofer spoke about the emotional toll on first responders: “Even ones that are still here—it takes a large emotional toll,” he said. He praised community leaders like Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero and Cicero Town President Larry Dominick for their support.
The Blue Mass concluded with calls for compassion, faith, and mutual support led by Bishop Robert Lombardo of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Both chiefs highlighted that duty is shared among all who serve.
Superintendent Boyle closed with a hopeful message: “Let us protect not only our communities but the values that make them worth protecting."
The ceremony served as a reminder of first responders' sacrifices and the community's enduring gratitude.
