Public health officials from the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health have confirmed two measles cases, marking the first in Cook County for the year. One case involves a suburban Cook County resident of unknown vaccination status, who sought medical care on April 28 and was promptly isolated.

The second case was identified in a Chicago resident who traveled internationally through O’Hare Airport in early April. This individual had received one prior dose of the MMR vaccine and developed a rash on April 25, remaining isolated at home since being diagnosed.

Health officials stress the importance of vaccination for individuals 12 months of age or older who plan to travel internationally. They are urged to ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine at least two weeks before travel or have other evidence of immunity.

Efforts are underway to notify individuals who may have been exposed. The Cook County Department of Public Health is investigating the suburban case, while the City of Chicago Department of Public Health is managing the Chicago case.

Locations identified as points of potential exposure include Chicago Public Library's Independence Branch, Fittingly Delicious, O’Hare Airport, an Aldi store in Lyons, a Shell gas station in Stickney, and a Mobil station in Berwyn.

Individuals uncertain about their vaccination status are advised to contact their healthcare provider. Those who develop symptoms should notify their healthcare provider before visiting a medical office to ensure precautions are in place to prevent further exposure.

Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, Dr. Sameer Vohra, emphasized the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine, stating, "As public health officials around the state continue to work diligently to guard against further spread of measles, we are reminded again that being fully immunized remains the best and most effective way for everyone to protect themselves and those they love."

Interim Chief Operating Officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health, Dr. Kiran Joshi, noted the resurgence of measles in the U.S., citing misinformation as a factor contributing to declining vaccination rates.

Dr. Olusimbo Ige, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, mentioned Chicago's prior experience with a measles outbreak, expressing confidence in containing it again.

For more information on measles, individuals are directed to visit the CDC's website or call a Cook County Health community health center for vaccination appointments.
