The Village of Riverside encourages its residents to participate in International Dark Sky Week, taking place from April 21–28, 2025. The event aims to highlight the effects of light pollution and emphasize the importance of preserving natural night skies.
Riverside hosted a Dark Sky presentation on March 24, offering strategies to mitigate light pollution, protect wildlife, and improve nighttime visibility. For those unable to attend, the presentation can be accessed on the Village website, YouTube channel, and RiversideTV.
In line with Riverside’s environmental values, the community is encouraged to adopt measures to lessen light pollution. These measures include turning off unnecessary outdoor lighting after dark, using shielded, downward-facing light fixtures to reduce glare, and installing motion sensors or timers to conserve energy.
Reducing light pollution not only protects wildlife but also promotes better sleep and health, aligning with the Village’s sustainability goals. Residents are urged to work together to maintain dark skies, peaceful nights, and a protected environment.
